i’m making a quilt guest book for my wedding?
hello. i’ve decided instead of using a regular guest book for my wedding we are going to get solid fabric squares and have people write on them and then sew them together after the wedding. should i be fabric squares or buy a couple yards of fabric and cut them myself? also what could i use to have people write on the fabric?
It is extremely easy to cut the fabric yourself IF you have the tools. Scissors would be a pain, but if you have a rotary cutter, self healing mat, and acrylic ruler, you could cut the squares in just a few minutes. Remember to cut or buy the squares 1/2″ larger than you want them to be in the quilt, to allow for seams. Get 100% cotton fabric, preferably something a little heavier weight. I’d avoid cheap muslin, and look for a Kona Cotton. This is a brand that many fabric stores carry, and it has a nice substantial feel to it. It comes in over 100 colors, so you can certainly find something that works for you. White or cream would be best, depending on the colors you want for your finished quilt.
Take the time to find the correct markers! Sharpies are NOT the correct marker – they bleed into the fabric. Look for markers that say they are for fabric, and are permanent and can be washed. There are several different brands out there. I’d recommend trying a couple of individual markers – different colors, widths, and tip styles. Write on your fabric, heat set if required, then wash to see how the markers hold up. Many require heat setting, so iron the blocks as soon as possible so you don’t forget. I’ve had good luck with Marvy Fabric Markers and Marvy Brush Markers (but not their Paint Markers) and Pigma Micron markers (found in scrapbooking stores, too). I wasn’t thrilled with FabricMate markers – they seemed to run out quickly.EZ Quilting also has a permanent fabric marker that works pretty well.
Speaking of ironing, do your guests a favor and iron freezer paper to the back of your squares. This will keep the fabric from bunching as they write, and you’ll have much smoother signatures. Also, indicate the area where they can write, so you don’t have people writing in the seam allowance. A light pencil line works, or you can just cut your freezer paper smaller than the fabric squares.
