Machine Quilting Pattern
machine quilting pattern
How do I make a quilt?
I need some instructions on how to make a quilt.
The beginning steps: how to choose fabric.
Then how to cut pieces (how many, what size, etc.)
How to sew it.
I have access to a sewing machine and I know how to sew (by machine and hand) and have made a couple items of clothes but I am not good with the patterns and pretty much anything else.
Also we have some fabric at home and I’m thinking just squares sewn together. Nothing elaborate. Simple. And randomized (not in order). So I might just use the fabric we have at home.
But I need some instructions on how to even start.
Thanks in advance
I am at about the same skill level that you are. I have tried a couple of things and here’s what I’ve found-
1. Buy a rotary cutter. It’s a scissors that looks like a pizza cutter. They are a little expensive, but it makes all the difference in the world. Your cut squares will be MUCH more accurate, and things will come together much better and be easier to sew. I also got the mat to go with the rotary cutter, and found that to be invaluable as well. Together, they will be about $25 or so.
2. Finding a good mix of fabrics that go together is harder than you think. JoAnn Fabrics has a “quilt square of the month”, and I have often been tempted to just buy the fabric from that selection.
3. Squares are the easiest, shapes are difficult, and patterns or curved lines are very tough to do.
4. The word “quilt” to you and me means a blanket. To someone who actually sews them, the word “quilt” means to sew the top, batting, and back of the blanket together by hand or with the machine.
5. When you cut your squares, remember that you will be sewing it to other pieces. You need to cut it bigger to leave room for the seams all around the edge of the square.
Good Luck
