how do you sew those pretty patterns or the perfect straight lines on your quilt?

I am trying to teach myself how to quilt. I’ve been looking at nice quilts i like and many of them have a sew pattern seem (which i think is the actual quilting??) that goes over the whole thing attaching all layers?? Well my question is.. how do they do it? how do they sew designs like flowers or even just straight rows that are the same size or perfectly straight?? Is that all free hand or is there something you can put on yoru sewing machine i don’t know about? I really want to have a cool design on my quilt but i don’t know how to sew a straight light with my line quide thing covered up!
whats the secret??

by the way.. im not talking like sewing the actual pieces that make up the pattern together.. i mean the last step. The design made out of the thread that is in pretty patterns over the whole thing.

The sewing you are talking about is the quilting. It can be done by hand using stencils or hand drawn designs for pretty patterns, or masking tape to guide your perfectly straight stitches. It can be done on a sewing machine, although I have never done that myself. You can also have it done on a long-arm machine, which is what I have. That can be done freehand, or with stencils or other marking tools or guides, or a pantograph, which is an overall pattern repeated in rows across the whole quilt. Some machines also have computerized quilting if you want machine-precision quilting. Long-arm machines move while the quilt fabric is stationary, but on a sewing machine the quilt is moved around while the sewing machine is stationary. If you want to sew it yourself on a sewing machine there are all sorts of books that tell you how, or you can go to several websites for instruction. Google machine quilting and look for websites such as quilting.about.com, quilters cache, quilt university, etc. Like I said, I’ve never tried that myself, but I know many people do it. Good luck, whatever you decide.
